A lifelong fascination with ancient art and culture has had a profound influence on his style of painting. Primeval Indian Yantras, prehistoric imagery, symbolism and ancient texts and writing are all incorporated into his work.

His Yantras series, draw upon elements of ancient geometric icons designed to act in an harmonious and auspicious manner upon the psyche of the viewer.

The prehistoric art series explore the role of art at its earliest roots wherein primitive man attempts to exert an influence upon the world around him by reproducing scenes from his life in an almost symbolic manner.

His Silk road series ….Influenced by many oriental journeys including (off and on) 2 years spent in India . He lived for 7 months in Jaipur where he became a close friend of the curator of the Jaipur Palace Museum and was frequently invited to the Royal Palace for tea with the Maharani Gayatri Devi. The silk road paintings include elements such as rare 11th century coins minted in central Asia specifically for use on the silk road , 2,000 year old Roman and genuine rare Chinese coins which add to his work a link to the ancient past and a sense of real authenticity. Often his work is embellished with gold and silver, leaf, rare banknotes and postage stamps and bonds which he spares no time or expense to collect and include in his work.

He also enjoys an exploration of what he calls Narrative Abstract Expressionism as the imagery he uses while being abstracted tends to be quite suggestive with descriptive titles and stimuli to trigger the mind of the viewer to create their own interpretation about the meaning of his work.

James’s paintings posses a timeless mystical quality. They are built upon richly textured backgrounds incorporating warm earthy hues blended upon a deep earthy base of natural tones or strikingly brilliant colours juxtaposed to create maximum visual impact.

He has exhibited in numerous National and International Art Fairs and Galleries, and his work is in many private and corporate collections in the UK, India, Europe, Australia and the USA.
